Post #24: Palms Trax – Boiler Room x Dekmantel 2018

Dekmantel is a festival institution in Netherlands, held every summer in August, that gathers many DJs and producers of electronic music. A list of artists from the 2018 edition can be found here.
Palms Trax is a Dekmantel favourite and has been on the bill for several years now. This mix, recorded and broadcasted by Boiler Room this year, is truly fantastic. Exploring all ranges of disco, italo and house it keeps up the good vibe and the dancing.

Definitely one of my favourite mixes of the year (maybe my favourite actually) ! Start digging now !

Post #18: Vinyl Factory Mix #68: Israeli Groove by Fortuna Records – From Tel-Aviv with love

Eyh, Shalom to you !

Following my latest post, here is a mix from Fortuna Records out of Tel-Aviv, Israel. This one has been comissioned by the great vinylfactory website, so let’s not spoil them. Head over here for more info and tracklist about the mix.

What I like in this mix is the fact that although I don’t understand a word of hebrew, I enjoy the music. Actually it is not only about the language, it is also about the era, the culture, the traditions, the history in which this music was produced, and that I don’t know at all. I mean, besides a a few Jewish friends, a holiday trip to Israel a couple years ago and some history classes from college, well, I am rather a complete stranger to all of this. But I absolutely loved the mix.

To put it simply, what you are about to listen is an hour of israeli tunes mainly produced in the 60’s and 70’s. And you are going to love it. Highlights for me include the Aris San track (a Fortuna release), ‘Shine Again’ from Kutiman (the man behind the Thru-You videos) and the closing track from Arik Einstein, a stunning production.

Make sure you check out Fortuna Records and their releases because they are all ace !

Until next time,

Cheers,

Alex

PS: Image comes from VinylFactory as well and represents the Grazia release from Fortuna, a reedition of an extraordinay  1978 recording.

Post #17: Beats in Space Radio Show #836 with Mehmet Aslan -Hypnotizing as always

Hello people.

Please meet Mehmet Aslan, as turkish DJ based in Basel, Switzerland, who realizes the perfect fusion of folk and traditional songs with electronic ryhtm. I’m a lot into this ‘East meets West in a club’ thing at the moment; different sonorities finally get to mix with each other and produce new atmospheres never heard before.

Here is a list of labels/DJs/producers you want to check out:

Baris K and his band Insanlar from Istanbul, the duo Red Axes from Tel-Aviv, Khidja from Bucarest, Moscoman from Disco Halal, all the crew from Cairo with Bosaina and Hussein Sherbini representing “KIK” – Kairo Is Koming (read this great RA article here), the guys from Fortuna Records also from Israel and Jannis of Habibi Funk, those last two specializing in reissues from respectively the middle East (notably Israel and Turkey) and Northern Africa (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia). And of course, hailing from Paris, the duo that started it all for me, Acid Arab who is getting bigger and bigger around Europe.

All these people contribute to the development of ‘arabic’ music in Europe and are also attracting european producers in their home countries. Numerous festivals have been created notably in Morocco (Nuits Sonores Tanger, Oasis) and Tunisia (Les Dunes Electroniques) while underground institutions like Boiler Room and the Red Bull Music Academy have put on shows in Turkey and Israel, showcasing the local talents.

I hope you will like this mix and dig deep into these sounds !

Until next time,

Alex

Post # 13: Nils Frahm Xmas mix 2014 – Perfect is the word

Following the release of his new live album, ‘Spaces’, Nils Frahm truly had an incredible 2014 year, playing numerous concerts and festivals. Now he says goodbye to this perfect year with his ‘Xmas mix’, a delightful hour-long selection of jazz, classical and piano music from a lost era located somewhere between the 30’s and the 60’s. A rare and precious moment.

Post #12: Todd Terje live @ Øya Festival 2014 – Northern lights go live

In April 2014, after several years of waiting, Todd Terje has finally released his first album, the aptly named “It’s Album Time”. Well, now it is all about show time, and this one comes with special care from the bearded Norwegian: a full live band, including a duet of violins, a viking drummer, a bongo player and some 20 dancers with strings of fairy lights. Wait for it. This is going to be the best thing you will see this year.
